This 197-mile walk, which runs from Robin Hood’s Bay on the East to St. Bees and the Irish Sea on the West, was made famous by Alfred Wainwright, the well-known writer and hill walker.

What makes this coast to coast walk so special?

The coast to coast walk from Robin Hood’s Bay to St. Bee’s is quite possibly the most picturesque and beautiful of all the cross country walks in England. Crossing three National Parks you will be treated to some of the most stunning, beautiful and untouched landscapes that England has to offer - from the Pennines, to Swaldale, to the majestic mountains of the Lake District.

The village of Ennerdale Bridge is particularly fortunate to be positioned on the last leg of this most magnificent of Coastal Walks, as it is less than a mile’s distance from Ennerdale Water, the most westerly and remote of all the Lakes in the Lake District. Here you really can walk in the footsteps of Wainwright, knowing that very little has changed in the half century since he first devised the walk.

This magical last leg of the walk covers 13 miles and crosses Cleator, Dent and finally ending up at the St. Bee’s on the Irish Sea. A truly fitting end to a marvellous journey.

The forests in the valley around Ennerdale Bridge are among the largest in the whole of Cumbria, and contain many beautiful and picturesque footpath and cyclepath routes.

Speaking of cycle paths, there’s the Whitehaven Cycle Path which runs from Whitehaven to Rowrah, providing a great way to see some wonderful countryside.

Ennerdale Bridge is a particularly popular stopping off point for folk on Wainwright’s famous Coast to Coast Walk, which runs from St. Bees on the west coast to Robin Hood’s Bay on the east coast. Finally, you’ve got Ennerdale Water. This is the most westerly and remote of all the lakes, and so offers a fantastic place to unwind, relax and forget all the stresses and strains of life, even in the high season. The only one of the lakes without a road running alongside it, it offers the opportunity to really step back in time and sample one of nature’s and England’s finest landscapes. Popular with the poet Wordsworth, you can literally walk in his footsteps, and understand what attracted him to such a beautiful place, where time seems to stand still.

The 22nd of September is a special time of year. The contrast between the golden colors of the larch’s, beech and oaks along the lakeshore with the evergreen of the spruce are magnificient. In addition to the trees changing colours the heather, bracken and bilberry also add new vibrant colors to the mountains above the forest.”
